The Company

Metalenz, a Boston based venture backed startup built on foundational research from Harvard University, develops next-generation imaging and sensing solutions for high-volume consumer electronics markets using patented low-cost metasurface technology, advanced image processing, and novel machine learning algorithms. The Company’s latest product, Polar ID, is a groundbreaking polarizing camera that leverages the unique characteristics of metasurfaces to enable secure and affordable face unlock for all smartphones.

The Position

Metalenz is at the forefront of developing next-generation biometric sensing systems for consumer electronics, leveraging metasurface devices. We are actively seeking a talented and motivated student to join our team and contribute to the development of this cutting-edge technology. As an intern, you’ll have the unique opportunity to collaborate with a team of experts in the field, working to understand how processing affects device performance and enabling improved image collection.

What you’ll do:

  • Develop image processing algorithms to determine feature sizes on SEM images.
  • Analyze feature size data to quantify variability and correlations between features.
  • Collect SEM images of metasurfaces for analysis
What you’ll need:
  • Student enrolled in a Master’s or Ph.D. program in a relevant field such as optical engineering, electrical engineering, physics, computer science, or a related discipline.
  • Image processing experience, for example mathematical morphology, binarization, edge detection, noise reduction, and feature extraction.
  • Data and statistical analysis experience (e.g., programs like jmp, R, Matlab, experience with systematic and random error assessment, correlation metrics, or regression analysis)
  • Experience operating an SEM
  • Programming experience with languages like Python, Julia or MATLAB, ideally for data analysis.
  • Proven ability to work independently
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Other helpful experience:
    • Optical simulation ideally with FDTD (Meep) or RCWA.
    • Familiarity with optical measurements (quantum efficiency, MTF, etc.)

What we do

  • Work with consumer electronic OEMs to commercialize meta-optics
  • Design next-generation optical systems for emerging consumer applications like 3D sensing
  • Apply a modern software stack and cutting-edge developments in scientific computing (automatic differentiation, scientific machine learning, nonlinear optimization, etc.) to unexplored problem domains in optical system design

What we offer

  • Based in downtown Boston near TD Garden, Metalenz is conveniently located across the street from North Station
  • Collaborative office space, flexible work schedule with hybrid and/or work-from-home arrangements for qualified positions
  • Complimentary snacks and drinks, and occasionally lunch on-site
  • Free gym and bike parking on-site
  • Fun, energizing, highly collaborative environment in which each team member has the opportunity to make an impact
